I began my ministry in a church with more than 300 members. Wanting to serve effectively, I asked members to share the three most important things they expected from me. Their answers varied, but one stood out: “Pastor, we want you to stay healthy.” That response surprised me, yet it carried a powerful lesson.

Jesus affirms this lesson in John 10:10: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (NKJV). Abundant life includes caring for our minds and bodies.

Ministry often drains energy, leaving pastors vulnerable to fatigue, forgetfulness, and burnout. The good news is that simple, practical habits can renew strength and sharpen the mind. Here are seven activities to strengthen your ministry and keep you joyfully serving.

1. Handwrite the Bible daily

Typing is quick, but handwriting scripture engages the brain more deeply. Research shows handwriting activates multiple senses, strengthens memory, and improves recall.1 Writing verses daily enables pastors to internalize God’s Word so that it flows naturally in preaching, counseling, and conversations.

Takeaway: Write at least one verse by hand each day.

2. Exercise daily

Walking 30 to 60 minutes daily improves blood flow to the brain, enlarges the memory center, and reduces stress. Many pastors testify that their best prayer and sermon preparation happens during a walk.

Takeaway: Use time on a daily walk to pray, reflect, or listen to scripture or scripture songs.

3. Memorize scripture

Scripture memorization strengthens recall, enriches preaching, and equips pastors to spontaneously speak encouragement.

Takeaway: Memorizing even one verse a day builds a spiritual reservoir for ministry.

4. Stay hydrated

The brain is composed of about 90 percent water. Even mild dehydration impairs focus, memory, and mood. Too many pastors run on soft drinks while neglecting water, leading to fatigue and headaches. Staying hydrated with water sharpens clarity and stamina.

Takeaway: Aim for about 64 ounces of water a day. Before breakfast, begin each morning with 20 to 30 ounces of water.

5. Eat a simple, plant-based diet

Diet impacts not only physical health but also mental clarity. A simple, plant-based diet nourishes the body and sharpens the mind. Wise dietary choices fuel ministry effectiveness.

Takeaway: Choose whole, unprocessed foods whenever possible.

6. Get sufficient sleep

Pastoral duties often tempt leaders to cut back on rest, but sleep is essential for maintaining focus, memory, and effective decision-making. Seven to eight hours of quality rest refreshes the brain and prepares pastors for effective service.

Takeaway: Protect your sleep as part of ministry preparation. A rested pastor is a sharper, Spirit-ready pastor.

7. Practice self-discipline

Ministry requires discipline. Self-control means saying yes to habits that strengthen you and no to those that weaken you.

Takeaway: Practice temperance. Discipline in diet, rest, and study creates space for God’s wisdom to grow in your life.

Aligning with God’s plan

Caring for your health is not selfish—it is a form of stewardship. When pastors stay healthy, they serve with energy, clarity, and compassion. By following these seven activities, you align with God’s plan for abundant living.

Pastor, live healthy. Staying healthy will strengthen your body and mind. You will become “smarter” and stronger for the work of ministry.
