The Archaeology and Cultural Background Study Bible is the work of more than 80 Seventh-day Adventist scholars. Conceived under the general direction and executive production of Mario P. Marinelli, it contains more than 700 articles on biblical archaeology and history. This study Bible is dedicated to Siegfried H. Horn, a pioneering Seventh-day Adventist archaeologist who served as a missionary and professor.
Notable features
I found this Bible’s practical and well-designed format helpful for digging deeper into God’s Word. I appreciated the attention to seemingly minor details. One notable feature is that the chapter and verse numbers are highlighted in dark and light blue, making it easier to find a biblical passage.
The primary focus of this Bible is to give the reader the historical, cultural, and social context of both Testaments. Information is thoughtfully displayed and accessible in well-illustrated printed and electronic formats. The “Resources and Features” section explains unique elements and includes general, topical, and alphabetical indices as search options.
Of particular interest are the online resources, which the publishing company promises to expand as additional articles and videos become available. The QR code links provide access to more than 130 videos about biblical archaeology, as well as hundreds of full-color photos, maps, and diagrams. Unfortunately, most videos are available only in Spanish with English subtitles.
For serious Bible students
This study Bible is appropriate for reference work. Maps, pictures, illustrations, and diagrams may sometimes interrupt the flow of the biblical text from one chapter to another. Regardless, it is a most welcome resource for serious Bible students because of the wealth of information provided in a single source.
Another helpful feature is a short introduction to each book of the Bible, providing additional information about the author, the book’s audience and purpose, and the book’s theme, with a careful outline. Each summary concludes with a brief bibliography for further study and research.
Additional information is available through QR codes, which enhances the content of each book. For example, the book of 1 Kings has a QR code titled “Rulers and Empires” in its first chapter. Then, a subtitle with a quote from 1 Kings 1:1, “The Chronology of the Kings of Judah and Israel.” This link contains a document chronologically listing all the kings of Judah and Israel. This is most helpful, especially in connecting when these kings reigned and charting the succession of kings for both kingdoms side by side.
Commendations
I commend the publishers for providing information on fascinating archaeological discoveries and well-documented supporting historical facts found outside of the Bible. The unique features present up-to-date information on biblical archaeology while allowing readers to connect the text to its cultural, historical, and social context. This allows us to discover that our experiences and challenges are not so different across time and culture.
I highly recommend this work for those who desire a deeper understanding of the Bible. It is encouraging to see Adventist scholars from around the world collaborating to bring the most relevant and detailed information to Bible teachers, pastors, students, and anyone who desires a comprehensive glimpse into the fascinating world of the Bible.>
