Ministry often proves to be a task-driven occupation. While we recognize that our calling, at its core, argues for a people orientation, too often we become bogged down with – even addicted to – the call of various duties and responsibilities.

Yet even if I faithfully execute God’s biddings to serve my fellow humanity, doing so still remains, at best, my secondary calling. I must keep in mind the words of Christ’s prayer in John 17, “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent” (v.3, NIV). Knowing Christ, having a daily walk with Him, must ever remain my primary task. While such a spiritual journey paves the way for a truly successful ministry, even without such a service aspect in mind, I need that day-by-day relationship with Him for my own temporal and eternal well-being.
