On a recent trip to Hawaii, I learned about a famous Hawaiian lifeguard and swimmer, Eddie Aikau. During his short life of 31 years, Eddie frequently had to brave surf 20 feet high to rescue swimmers and surfers who were in distress. His willingness to risk his own life in order to save others earned him the respect of all who knew him. Not one life was lost during the time he served as the first lifeguard hired by the City and County of Honolulu to serve on the dangerous North Shore of Oahu. Occasionally, you will still see T-shirts or bumper stickers with the message “EDDIE WOULD GO.” His story reminded me of the words of Scripture, written by the prophet Isaiah 2,700 years ago: “Then I heard the voice of the LORD saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I, send me.”
