Did you hear the remarkable story about the ten-year-old boy from Atlanta, Georgia, who sang his way to freedom?[if !supportFootnotes][1][endif] Willie Myrick was grabbed in front of his house and thrown into the back of a car by a malicious assailant. Instead of screaming, Willie just began singing praises to God—and he refused to stop, even when his kidnapper yelled at him and told him to be quiet.  After listening to this young follower of Jesus praise God in song for almost three hours, the infuriated assailant finally let Willie out of the car.  I imagine angels observed the scene and rejoiced.  They also love to sing praises to God.

Three thousand years ago, the psalmist David declared, “I will bless the LORD at all times.  His praise shall continually be in my mouth” (Psalm 34:1, NKJV).  Willie put this strategy into practice and sang his way to freedom.  His story reminds me of some other followers of Jesus who sang their way to freedom.  Some malicious assailants in Philippi unjustly incarcerated Paul and Silas.  Many would gripe and complain if thrust into a similar situation. Not Paul and Silas—they sang praises to God!  And even before their external circumstances changed, they experienced an internal freedom that no assailant could take from them.  It was true two thousand years ago, and it’s still true today—“if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36, NIV).

Thank you, Willie, for reminding us all—when we lift our hearts in unending praise to God we can sing our way to freedom!
